Surgery

Cam had surgery on his knee this morning. The part that worried him the most was the IV. He hates needles.

We had to be at the hospital by 10am and surgery was scheduled for 11:30am. They immediately put Cam in his room and gave him a gown to wear. He also decided to wear the supplied socks. The socks were really too small for him. He wore them like footies, even though they weren't.

Besides the socks, the bed was also too small. The nurse tells us that the bed is 6 foot long. Cam is around 6' 1", maybe more. The bottom of the bed had a foot board so he had to lay at an angle.

They had to do his IV next. This turned out to be the worst part. The first nurse blew the first vein. Cam made her very nervous because he was so tense. Cam kept saying, "Ow, ow ow" and "that hurts" and was making a lot of noises. That nurse went and got another nurse to do the second one. Cam did the same thing with her. He told her that he was going to puke and he was sweating and everything. That nurse ended up blowing the second vein. She then had to put the third one in the crease of the arm, which they don't like to do but it worked.

Cam had another half an hour before he went in. The anesthesiologist came in to talk to him and asked him if he needed something to relax. He responded with a definite "yes". They put something in his IV and started counting backward from 5. When she hit 1, Cam was zoning. He was really out of it. I think I could have asked him anything and been able to learn all his secrets :).

The procedure lasted 45 minutes. He spent another 45 minutes in recovery. We met him back in his room after that. He had really red eyes and was having a hard time waking up. The nurse told him to let her know when he wanted something to eat. His eyes were closed but he loudly replied, "I'm ready for something to eat". He thought he was about to starve to death by that point.

It was probably another hour when the anesthesiologist came in. He asked Cam if he ate yet. Cam told him that he was still waiting. He didn't know why it was taking so long and asked Cam what he wanted to eat. Cam said, "Pepsi, Turkey Sandwich, and Peaches". The anesthesiologist went to the hall and asked for them to bring Cam exactly that. He then had his food within 10 minutes.

Before long, he was getting dressed and heading home. He came in the door and claimed the recliner since it would put his foot at shoulder level, like they require. We bought him a new Xbox 360 game. We gave him that with a card. Grandma Jan brought him a card that was also from Dustin. She included some money in it. She told him that he could buy whatever makes him feel better. Grandma Doris brought Cameron his favorite food...Meat Loaf. Cam went crazy over that. He still thought he was starving so the meatloaf hit the spot.

After a few hours of being home, he took some time to talk with a few friends. They were all sooo worried about him. Keith and Jenny actually walked to the hospital to check on him but we were already home.

Cam spent his entire day resting, eating, and playing his Xbox 360.Can you believe that our cat Gabby spent the entire day laying with Cam?

This is the only place she wanted to be. She sensed that he was injured and made sure she was with him all day. Whenever Cam had to go to the potty, we would pick her up and put her on the couch. She would go right back to him after he returned to the chair.
